Married women apply vermillion for the long life of their husbands.  The use of Vermillion holds importance in rituals and pujas.

Many Gods and Goddesses are offered vermillion. Even Lord Hanuman is offered vermillion and oil.  It is believed that Hanuman grants all the wishes of his devotees.

According to the scriptures, Lord Hanuman is the greatest devotee of Lord Rama. Once he saw Sita applying vermillion and asked her the purpose of it.

Sita explained that she applies vermillion for the long life of her husband, Lord Rama. After hearing this, Hanuman thinks, if applying a pinch of vermillion can increase Lord Rama’s age then if I apply vermillion on my whole body it will make him immortal. He starts applying vermillion all over his body.

Since then it is believed that appeases him and he grants the wishes of his devotees.
