The city of Narayanpet comes alive with the clacking of the looms  as the weavers set  them in motion. This town is famous for its cotton and silk sarees and almost everyone is a skilled artisan. They are from every community and religion. There are Telugus, Marathis and Kannadigas and Hindus and Muslims work together to create magic with their fingers.


It is  a weavers town. It is a small town with a population of 50,000 people. Narayanpet lies in the border between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The setting is rather quaint.  Old exquisite houses with some jaali work lie faded in a corner. There are small lanes that take you to huddled houses decorated with colourful rangoli. Adorned with brightly coloured doors.


The colours of the sarees  brighten up the mood, the traditional motifs and rich designs come alive as bright gold borders adorn the rich tapestry of colours. Soft and silky yarn comes alive with myriad shades and patterns. And we are lost in the many blues and reds and as the silk rustles into a six yard glory.  The sound  of  the clickety-click of another handloom  is heard at work in  Mehboobnagar. The creation of the Narayanpet Silk sarees, which are beautiful and rich to look at and are comfortable to wear round the year because of its light weight, is a common profession.
