Travelogue – Pochampally

by Shatika, February 1, 2016

Popularly known for its cotton sarees, Pochampally is a well known cotton weaving centre in Andhra Pradesh. Located just 50 km from the state capital Hyderabad, Pochampally makes for an interesting day excursion for travellers interested in getting a glimpse of the cotton weaving art. There are thousands of weavers in Pochampally who use their loom to create beautiful designs and patterns. Pochampally was also the main centre of Acharya Vinoba Bhave’s Bhoodan (donation of land for community use) movement. The ashram of Vinoba Bhave is located on the banks of a lake here.

Pochampally is closely associated with Acharya Vinoba Bhave. In fact Pochampally was the launching pad of Vinobha Bhave’s land donation movement (Bhoodan Movement). Vinobha Mandir is an important landmark in Pochampally. Here the statues of Acharya Vinobha Bhave and first land donor Sri Ramchandra Reddy along with a Bhoodan Stupam exist as a reminder of the land donation movement.
